People who keep a firearm for defense of their home?
Do you utilize any other resources? I was thinking of getting a simple battery powered motion sensor alarm.

First. I have outdoor flood lights. Some of these lights are connected to motion sensors and turn themselves on automatically when something the size of a rabbit or large crosses the path.
I also use light timers in some areas of the house to let people know that there is constant activity inside the home.
A wired alarm system. Each one of my doors is wired to set-off the alarm. The only area where I use a motion sensor is my garage...so I am free to roam about the house without setting off the alarm...except when I open on of the doors or go into the garage. Also, I have a 15 second "buzzer" that sounds before the main siren starts to wail. This way if I mistakenly do open a door without disarming the alarm, I can quickly shut if off when I hear the buzzer sound.
Along with my firearms I also keep some pepper spray handy.
I have a neighbor that lives across the road by me. I keep an eye on their house and they keep an eye on my house and report any suspcious activity.
Sometimes people will pull their automobiles off the road near my home to sit and talk on their cell phones. Or, so I think. I make a note of make, model, color of the automobiles that do this...and also try to jot down the license plate number if I can. It's better to have a handful of notes to throw away after a couple of months...than to realize that someone's house has been burglarized and it was probably a professional job where they staked-out the neighborhood in advance.
