What the hell is wrong with my gas barbecue / grill?

I have a gas barbecue (not old) and it worked fine until a couple of months, when I turn it on and nothing happened. So I looked at the gauge just below and said "should be replaced," so I thought the gas had finish. There was no need to use it again until the other day and went to take the gas tank off to fill it. By turning the screw, the gas began to flow and could smell. So I quickly screwed up and the flag had become the green section suggests that had about a third of a tank of gas left. So I went on.
