how do i re-varnish wicker/rattan chairs?
i have patio chairs that have a dark brown varnish on them. the back rest is all faded and is now like a light cream color. i want to refinish them. do i need to take off all of the varnish on other areas first, if so how, and what do i use to re-finish them? is it easier to repaint instead? thank you!
Rattan/wicker furniture can be stripped , but it is messy.
Not cheap & worth a facelift.
Had a shop & would use a cold chemical dip followed by a caustic dip.
In good shape (painted or varnished) it cleans up well.
Might look into a commercial stripper since it is easy work & will not cost tooo much.
If it is the original finish & in good shape & you want to return the original color , best to get the old finish off.
A cheap liquid paint remover should do it.
Prepare a work area ( cover yourself as well) & try using plastic scrub brushes & cheap paint brushes w/ the bristles cut down to an inch or two to work out the crevices.
Sanding will make a mess of it.
It will splatter so cover your eyes.
When you get it clean enough continue scrubbing w/ mineral spirits & mopping w/ rags.
Let it dry completely
Woven furniture is hard to stain.
For DIY,Would look for tinted finishes in spraycans but varnish can be tinted & brushed on w/ a fairly dry brush.
Polyurethanes will look good for a while but will scab & be a real mess to redo.
A marine grade varnish is more durable & stands up well to weather.
Once cleaned you could revarnish or paint, (which is easier if the old finish is intact & just faded.)
In really good shape a wipedown w/ spirits may be enough.before painting
Would use exterior grade primer & paint in spraycans.
