Tree Swings Chains
Does anyone have an idea on how to hang one of those plastic child swings from a tree.?
We bought a plastic child swing at a garage sale intending on hanging it from a tree. We we took it out of the box it has rope and then chains on it. How could we hang that from a tree that would be secure and safe? Thanks!
First you need to be sure the tree branch in question is strong enough. Remember that for a swing, its more than the weight of the child -- its the weight of the child with CENTRIPETAL force as the child swings, which is considerably higher.
Once you've found a branch that will adequately support the weight, attach a 2x4 to the underside of the branch with heavy screws. This will add additional strength to the branch as well as be a hanging platform for the swing.
Attach two heavy strength eye bolts/lags into the 2x4 about 2.5 feet apart for the swing itself.
Attach the swing's chain to the eye bolts/lags and clamp. Then, as an added safety precaution, reinforce the hanging with rope around the branch to the top link in the chain. Should one fail, the other will hold -- at least long enough for the child to get off the swing.
