How can i rescue my dried and brittle wicker conservatory lounger?
I have a lovely wicker lounger in my conservatory but the sun and heat has faded it, it is now squeaky and brittle (little bits fall off it). Is there anything i can put on it to rescue it, i thought about teak oil (i have never used this) but im worried the heat would later bring it out and it would end up on the clothes of anyone who laid on the lounger.
I dont think painting is and option, it would just be a very hard job for an ugly result. Any ideas would be appreciated....
If it is creaky & bits are falling off because of movement all is not lost..... however if it is just plain brittle it may not last too long no matter what you do.
If it is in fair condition, try regluing all the joints & before it sets completely , use rope to hold it in shape,
Take it outside & hose it down .
Tighten the ropes to draw it back into shape.
Let it dry...... completely.
Might try a thin mixture of equal parts shellac, linseed oil & mineral spirits, throw in a little denatured alcohol for luck.
(It's almost a french polish mix)
Work it in with a brush , let it drip through the weave & wipe it off or continue dry brushing until it dries but still has a little shine.
The shellac will seal , the linseed will "feed" help w/the creaking & the spirits & alcohol just thin & assist drying.
An application of pastewax thinned w/ mineral spirits will not hurt, work it in with brush & use a brush to remove the residue...like polishing shoes.
If the piece is strong & holds its shape after regluing & wetting the thinned wax mix may be enough.
