Can I keep my air conditioner?
We put on an addition and I am wondering if I can keep my old unit. It is a pretty big addition. The basement is 30x24 the upstairs 32x24. The new addition is roughly 1500 sf and the house is 1300 sf. So 2800 total. My heat pump is about 5 years old and is 2.5 tons. I know there is a lot of factors to figure out. I have all new windows and doors in the house. It is well insulated and has good attic ventilation. Our whole yard is shaded and the garage is on the west end of the house so no sun coming in the windows in the evening. I live in Kentucky. Also 1/3 of the basement is a storage room that don't have to be cooled.
I am going to call a professional but was just trying to educate myself. I don't know much about this and was hoping I could keep my unit but I know it might be too much on it. Thanks.
We are going to put a drop ceiling in the basement so everything is still open to run the ducts.
Keep the "old" system and install a new system for the addition.
This way you have separate controls for the 2 zones and if one unit goes down you still will have heat and cooling in the other section.
I doubt the old system will work for the entire house now.
