A white girls misunderstanding of girls with color?
So my best friend is from Trinidad, he is probably one of the hottest people I know. His sister and Mother have the same looks and georgous complexion but when I was at his house the other day I saw some strange products in the bathroom...to lighten up their skin color!
I asked him about it and he just rolled his eyes saying they (his sister and mother) wish they were white. Why would anyone want to get rid of that color, I could spray tan and cancer bed myself to death and never get what they have!
Do many darker girls use these products? Why? Do you find it funny that white girls like me try to get some pigment while other girls of color try to bleach theirs out? Is it like the grass is greener on the other side?
It is very sad to say that this is not only true in American and among AAs it is true all over the world and with many different non-white races.
In places that haven't been exposed to rampant colonialism or western media this isn't the case, but for those that have lighter skin is almost always seen as more attractive. What is horribly sad is that it is actually now true in some areas in AFRICA! I have heard that (at least a couple of years ago) that skin bleaching products (some of them cheaper and dangerous ones) are becoming more and more popular there. Very sad, but true.
In some cases it may not be so much about believing that White skin is the only skin that can be beautiful, but that "lighter" skin is desirable because in the past it was only women who were wealthy who were able to stay indoors rather work outside in sun. Pale skin meant that the woman was from such a prosperous family that she did not need to difficult outside labor.
Its strange to think that something so archaic would still affect people so strongly, but it does.
