how do i get rid of starling birds?
i have a giant maple tree in my backyard and i used to have a woodpecker living in it. he has made several holes and now these starling have came and taken the tree over and ran the woodpecker off and several other native birds. it is legal to kill these things but there is a lot of them and would take me forever. they are also pooping, which im sure carries a lot of diseases, all over my patio furniture making it impossible to sit out there and enjoy my yard. Ive killed two of them with a .22 long rifle. if i keep killing them will they eventually move some where else??? are there any alternative ways to get rid of them?
what is wrong with me? they are running all of the native birds away and their fieces is all over my patio furniture making my family not able to sit outside at night and enjoy our house. that is whats wrong with me. your not the one with the problem
I am a lover of these birds. I currently own two as pets in our home. We have raised them from 5 days old. They make great house pets and easily taught to talk. However I can understand your dilemma so before you kill anymore try a more natural way of solving your problem. Get a few rubber snakes, a plastic Owl that is life size. Put them on your patio and around the bottom of the trees place the rubber snake. If you don't want to buy the snakes then you can make them out of a old water hose and spray them black. Move the fake snakes everyday to a different spot. The birds will think they are real and leave. They won't want to nest there. When you see them gone remove the fake snakes and allow the songbirds back. Starlings are a big problem as well as the sparrows. They rob the nest of the other birds so they can nest in that spot. Starlings are very aggressive birds. This is why they aren't protected by law. I don't know about shooting them if you can or not. However I know you can't fire a gun inside the city limits. Be careful of that. Try my way first and see what happens. Good Luck.
