how do i keep my ferret from burrowing inside my recliner?
he loves to go under the recliner and climb inside, then he claws out all the padding. i sewed and stapled a lining on the bottom of the chair, so now he claws at the seams on the side of the chair till he makes a hole big enough to get in.
i was told that they respond to punishment by alienating themselves from you. so i dont want to do that. if i immediately grab him and toss him away from the chair, he associates the chair with attention, so he loves it more. but if i ignore him, he climbs right back into the chair. and starts clawing away.
You shouldn't have the recliner where your fuzz-butt can get it!
Next to intestinal blockages, reclining chairs and sofas are the #1 cause of accidental death in ferrets! They do just what yours is doing and they get caught in the gears and killed when someone doesn't realize he's in there and opens/closes it. Please, either remove the recliner from your ferret's play area, or move your ferret to a different play area!
You *won't* be able to get him to stop digging. It's what they do. Punishing him won't get him to stop and taking him away from it makes him want it more. Do yourselves both a favor and get rid of the chair or let your ferret play somewhere else.
