Cleaning Cast Iron with NO Rust?
When we purchased our 60 year old house, a small, cook top Rex cast iron stove came with it. Anyone who comes to the house wants to purchase it, but I have no idea what it is worth. We're never going to use this stove, and it seems almost a waste to let it sit there, so why not sell it to someone who would appreciate it. We've found someone who will appraise it for us, but we would like to clean it up a bit. When we googled "cleaning cast iron" we get a world of knowledge on cleaning cast iron that has rusted over the years. The stove has no rust, just years of built up dust. I've seen old cast iron cookware quickly begin to rust if not dried, so water is out. I've watched my grandmother "season" cast iron skillets for years by "greasing" them, but I'm not sure if rubbing cooking oil all over a cast iron stove is the answer either. Someone suggested WD-40, but 75% of WD-40 is extremely flammable. Any suggestions?
HVAC Tech.: As this is a cast stove with little or no rust, your best move would be to just dust it off maybe with a wire brush even, then paint it with "STOVE BLACK paint" that will protect it from rusting as well as adding to its' value. You must use the 'stove black' paint available at most hardware stores, because it is heat resistant. These days they are quite valuable and in high demand.
