What is the cheapest way to add usable space in a backyard?
My husband and I rent. Our landlord is a ... well slumlord as we like to call him. The house is nice, but he refuses to fix anything that ever needs fixing.
When we moved in it was during the dry season, well from March until July our backyard is a swamp.
We were going to put a deck out back (frankly speaking it's worth 500 bucks to be able to sit in my backyard)....but hubby says NO.
What is a really cheap way to make a 12 x 12 area out back that we can put furniture and a grill on?
My brother suggested nailing some 2 x 4's together and laying plywood (pressboard) on it and covering it with that green outdoor carpet...
Any suggestions?

Pressboard will fall begin to warp and fall apart after a few months. If you go over to Lowe's in the roofing section you can get several sheets of roof sheeting really cheap:

It's made out of fiberglass so it will last nearly forever.
You could cover the ground with a bunch of flagstones:

You don't have to use cement, just bury them in the dirt that way it won't be a permanent change to the property.
