How to choose a dining room table
Think about the most important piece of furniture in your home; what is it? Is it the china hutch in your dining room, or how about your couch? A lot of people think their TV is the centerpiece of their home but in truth the most functional furniture piece you own is your dining room table. Think about it; it is big, functional, and offers a dining and meeting area for your family and friends. Most people consider the dining room table to be focal point of the home, and as such great care must be taken to ensure you select the right table that will fit your home and lifestyle.
So how do you find a dining room table that will fit the décor of the room and be functional yet affordable? Let’s start with the price. There are many table and chair sets available at bargain prices (around $300). These can usually be found at large retail stores and are meant to be accessible and convenient. These work will in a pinch or if you’re budget is very tight, but you will find that their quality is very low when compared to even a mid-to-high level table, which can usually be had used for around $500. Cheaper tables will usually be made out of plastics and composite woods and should be avoided unless necessary, since even a used table and chair set of medium quality will be a far greater value for the same price.
Obviously if you have a larger budget, you will find much better furniture. For example, a fine quality oak table will usually start around $1000, with the price going up depending on the size and manufacture. High quality solid wood tables are very expensive because of the wood attributes and craftsmanship. It is very common for high quality wood tables to be passed down for generations, often increasing in value as time goes by. If you are interested in purchasing a higher quality metal or glass top table, expect to pay almost equivalent prices, but note that these tables usually lose value with age compared to their wood counterparts.
So should you choose wood, metal, or a glass top table? That will mostly depend on your personal tastes and how well you feel each type of table will flow with the décor of the room. Modern homes usually benefit the most from metal and glass top tables and it is easy to find a variety of styles so suit your tastes. Don’t be afraid to try different materials if you feel it will fit nicely in your dining room. With higher quality furniture, you will find that you are usually dealing with stores and dealers who are willing to let you trade the table for a different one if it doesn’t meet your liking.
The next thing you will have to consider is whether you want a square or round table. This is very simple. If your room is mostly round, get a round table. If your room is mostly square, get a square table. After the shape is decided it’s time to figure out how large a table you would like to purchase. You will need to find one that will fit well in the dining area yet not be too big. Table that are too big limits chair and movement space and will make the room look small. Tables that are too small will make the room look empty. Decide how many people you usually have sitting at the table and work from there. If you entertain a lot, you will want to look into a table with removable leaves. Removable leaves will allow you to have an adjustable table that will fit well in your room, let allow you room to grow as more space is needed.
Choosing a dining room table can either be a frustrating or delightful experience depending on how well you prepare, how well you know your budget, and if you shop around extensively to make sure you can find what you are looking for.
