Fast Growing Trees for Lubbock, TX (Zone 7)?
I live in Lubbock, TX (Zone 7) and am looking for a very fast growing shade tree with a round shaped canopy to plant in the middle of my front yard. I don’t want a pine or other evergreen. There are no other trees nearby, so it will have full West TX sun. I had a fruitless mulberry tree at my previous house that grew extremely fast, more than 6ft per year for the 2 years I lived there. I thought about planting one at my new house but have been told they can be problematic since they have invasive root systems. Are they as bad as some people claim? I want a tree with similar growth rate but without roots that can cause damage to pipes and concrete. From what I understand, that excludes the Empress tree. Someone told me to plant a cedar elm instead but I have found conflicting growth rates posted online. Can anyone help me find the best tree to fit my needs?
Mulberries are nice tress IMO. I have a young seedling growing that I rescued as a stray. (Don't ask). I placed it in a pot outdoors to see how it will grow, and it's already a foot tall. Mulberries are fast growers and can destroy sidewalks if planted too closely. Their shade is nice and appreciated here in the desert.
I have an Empress tree in my backyard that came with the house. I don't really care for it but it does provide summer shade for a vegetable patch we developed near the tree. It's a messy tree as it drops its large purple flowers in late spring, and one offshoot is now growing a few feet away from the parent plant.
Fast-growing trees are heavy drinkers and also don't live as long as slow-growing trees.
I have a dear friend who lives in Lubbock (now that I think about it, he's an arborist!) and took me to the little duck pond in town. There were so many lovely mature trees there...check out the pond and see which ones you like. Cedar elms are quite common in TX so obviously they grow well there.
