Volunteer for Nosotros Tambien Podemos in Nicaragua
This is a special education center that was founded 4 years ago with the objective to help mentally disabled youth integrate into society through skills development, education, and the development of personal autonomy. The organization provides classes and workshops in the morning and afternoon. In the morning basic training consists of teaching the youth personal hygiene such how to take bathe, get dress, brush their teeth, wash their clothes etc. We try to teach them basic language knowledge, written and spoken. Lunch is provided on the placement. In the afternoon they attend workshops and learn how to make various hand-made crafts such as small hammocks, piñatas, jewelry, figurines and what they love the most sea shell crafts. The crafts are displayed and sold at an artisan store which is owned by the organization. All proceeds are used to cover the cost of materials and re-invested into programs run by the organization. We enable them to know that they too, can make a living, have fun, learn, and participate in society as equals. They need friendly people on this big humanitarian task, in whatever field they offer to. Despite the big need, what they need the most is tender loving people, that can offer their time and hands to come and help.
