California University-Sponsored Poker Tournaments Legal?
I was standing in line with a buddy of mine for a poker tournament being held on my college campus (I got to Cal Poly State in California) when we got into a conversation about the legality of the school holding a tournament. His argument, of which I suspect he knows nothing about, is that it is ILLEGAL for the school to be hosting a poker tournament. I argued that it was, in fact, legal based on the law changing in 2007 allowing nonprofits to hold controlled games once a year. His counterargument was that the school was not raising funds and that the game was for enjoyment purposes only (there was no charge to play and no prize. No cash involved at all). Can anyone support a for or against argument?- I'm looking through the California gambling laws not. $5 bucks and my ego are at stake here! thx
I don't keep up with California, but many places, the test is whether or not there is a "house" that takes a portion of the pot or collects a fee to play.
