Wall Light Fixture
I need advice on installing a wall mounted light fixture.?
The wall is the interior side of an exterior wall, with drywall. Directly behind where I want the fixture centered is a 2x4. There is currently a wire coming out of a hole in the wall, but no "box" or fixture for me to use to attach the base of the fixture. My basic question - do I need to move the 2/4 and install a box, or can I attach the base with wood screws directly to the 2x4? I worry that it might not have proper insulation or something. Can I attach the box to the existing 2x4 and mount the base off center? Any help or helpful links are genuinely appreciated. This DIY stuff is fun, except when it isn't. Electrical fires would definitely be in that later group.

most electrical boxes are about 2 and a quarter inch deep, loews or home depot does have an assortment of shallow boxes too, some as shallow as a half inch.....either way to keep it exactly where you'd prefer it you dig out (cut by whatever means you have available like a powersaw (messy) or a reciprocating saw ) the sheetrock and 2 x 4. resort to a chisle if needs be......the secure the box through the back to whatever is left if the stud with short screws.......that's the way it's done.......
