Why is that high frequency transformers can be smaller than their low frequency?
I understand that switching power supplies (As used in computer power supplies) can use small transformers, light, because they convert AC to DC and then convert the DC current high frequency before stepping the voltage through a transformer. For a given energy power supply, a switching power supply is much smaller and lighter than a source swithching not because you can use as a small transformer. Why allow a high frequency transformer more small to be used? I think that for a given power supply, if the change or not, the same amount of energy passes through the transformer. Since only the frequency of the input voltage is changed, but not the voltage, the currents in the windings of the transformer must also be the same for any type of supply. What is high frequency allows for smaller transformer to be used? Thanks!
