I'm relighting a predominatly generic CFL lighted room, not all the lights though.....?
There is quite a bit of tungten in there that won't be replaced ( tungsten xmas string lights ). The bulbs in there are 60 watt equivelent and when shooting I need f1.8 or faster, since my dof is so small, it is creatiing a lot of problems, so I figure I'll install some higher wattage bulbs ( it's all can lighted ) but I can't decide to get 2700k or 5000k . The 5000k is surely easier if any outdoor light leaks in, but the 2700k would match the tiungsten. I custom white balance of course.
Flash could be used. I would think that matching the 2700k tungsten, would be the choice, but there will also be point and shoots there. All the P&S will use flash, I won't. I need to keep them from being able to match the white's. Is 2700k still my best choice?
The light spillage from windows can be easily handled, the only windows in the building are very small. The building is in a bad neighborhood and are almost blacked out anyway.
I agree with Jay, but I'll just ramble on anyway. I have not seen the room and I don't know the weather forecast, so I don't know how much daylight will be a factor. Clearly, the Christmas lights WILL be a factor, so go with that. Check it out though to be sure that they are tungsten and not the newer LED lights. Who knows what color THEY are? I'll trust you already know that they are tungsten. I'd change the cans to 2700-ish bulbs, gel the flash, and to heck with the point and shooters. What a diabolical plan you have there.
I forget if you are a Nikon shooter, but Nikon speedlights all come with tungsten gels. Canon probably do, also.
Between your lighting strategy, custom WB, and shooting RAW, you should be good to go. Or at least better off than the rest of the crowd. You may have some local zones of daylight, but the overwhelming light will be 2700. Your images will just end up representing the conditions in the room. Trying to minimize the inclusion of any of the daylight is probably all you can do. Are there shades that you can close???
