Should I keep my stainless steel pipes?
Apparently, the house that has just moved to repiped for some strange reason with pipes stainless steel (not galvanized or stainless own copper.) I just replaced my bathtub and opened the wall and the new fixture is leaking. A plumber friend of mine has proposed to replace the entire section on the wall with copper. Should I keep the stainless steel or go with the proposal? I see a lot of amazing responses and I want to thank you all. These responses lead me to such a question: I have used a dielectric union to join (which seems to be) a brass fitting these stainless pipes ... I tried Teflon tape (filtering) of the putty that was leaked tried again. How I can use diectric union to join the two and leakage to avoid? Should I use the two together? Thanks again!
Unless you want to spend the money, keep the steel. It is there now and after you repair should not have to worry about it. Copper on the other hand is great, but you have to soldier, then, unless the house repipe have to join the copper stainless steel. When attached to metal types dissimiliar has a link that can go wrong in a few years. You want to avoid links that are hidden / difficult to achieve at all costs. Begin to leak and / or worse not then you will have a miserable time to reach them. Even PVC / CPVC has its limitations. Good luck.
