Is it my responsibility to deal with a student of social problems in a progress report to a parent?
I have a boy in my class, and is a real oddball. I just do not fit in. It does not get along with other students and I believe he intends this to be the case. I do not think any learning problem, I think it just needs more time working with their peers. Should I can bring my concern for social development in the light of parents, or should I highlight only their academic performance, which is excellent?
Once was in a graduate level Admissions Committee. If we receive a letter of recommendation said the student has not worked well with others, all gave a thumbs down, no matter how good the grades or test scores. Many, not all children equipped, have difficulty relating with peers, but this may be a hot topic. It has been pointed out that training swimmers do not do for the Olympic Games sit beside the pool while other swimmers work on the basics, but teachers do something very similar to gifted children in the classroom all the time. There are also teachers who do not like jumping degrees gifted children because they feel children should not go until their social skills improve (or fine and gross motor coordination ...). Could it be that the very difference between the ability of their students and the skills of fellow always prevented get along with children the same age. Do we have a plan to deal with that? And it is reasonable to expect children to implement a plan to improve opportunities another child of social interaction, because we believe that we should do? I want to discuss their concerns with parents, but not in a progress report. A telephone conference or conversation - with a lot of opportunities to express their own concerns - would be more effective. ~~~~~~~~ Another note that I forgot to mention. Am a big fan of cooperative learning, but many successful adults look back on group projects in school and just shake. His experience is exploited by their peers, and again. Even university education, I have had students complain to me about that group members know nothing about you. It is the experience of some gifted children that most members of most groups are nothing on their part. This type of behavior is usually tolerated in the workplace, but it is very common at school.
