What happened to the light switch? It's missing!!!?
I'm fixing up the outdoor deck of my apartment and noticed there's a light fixture on the wall out there. I screwed in a light bulb, but for the life of me, I can't find a switch. There's no switch outdoors. I've tried every conceivable light switch in the apartment, including a "mystery switch" that I've never been able to figure out what it controls. I'm thinking it may be controlled by a pull chain, as my only other outside light is controlled by a chain, but there's no chain hanging from this one. Is it possible the chain came off? And if so, can that be replaced, or would the whole fixture need to be replaced? Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome!
First let me answer the mystery switch problem for you. The mystery switch probably controls a wall receptacle. Sometimes, especially in apartments a plug on the wall is switched to allow you to plug in a lamp and be able to turn it on and off from a wall switch. Try plugging in a lamp in some of the receptacles in the room the switch is located (make sure you try the top plug and the bottom plug as most likely only one side of it is switched the other side will probably be hot all the time) try turning on the mystery switch each time you plug the lamp into a different outlet and see if the switch turns the lamp on and off.
As far as your deck light goes it could be a number of different problems ranging from a turned off or tripped breaker to a bad photocell or broken pull chain. Have your apartment maintenance personell check it out for you.
