How do you set up a Nikon D80 for dim light and fast action.?
Let's start by saying I'm camera illiterate. Can anyone please advise how to set up the camera for a indoor stage dance performance without a flash (not allowed). I've used the auto mode in the past, but the pictures come out dark and the movement makes the dancers a blurr. The lens is an auto 55-300 (I think). I've read the manual 100 times, but it's over my head. If you could answer in "dummy" format, I would appreciate it. Thanks.
Well, since you cant use a flash, higher iso will make the camera more sensitive to light, however, when high iso is used (>800) the images will get really grainy and "noisy"
-Try to use the smallest aperature (fstop) as well, to increase light into the camera.
-Using a tripod would be a good idea, or if the lens is stabilized that would help as well.
-A shutter speed around 1/60 would probably be the best, althought try some test shots and see what yields the best result.
-- It may be that having the dancers blur a little bit might make an interesting shot! You never know!
