Power socket from a light fitting?
We often work at our kitchen table, using our laptops. But as the table is in the middle of the room, we end up with power cables trailing across walkways to the wall sockets, which creates lots of trip hazards.
However, there is a standard pendant light fitting hanging above the table. Can I connect an adapter to this, to provide a 3 pin socket? If these aren't commercially available, any reason not to make one myself? (I know that lights are supposed to be on their own ring circuit... but the power draw of a laptop adapter will be less than a typical incandescent bulb)
The power adapters on the laptops are double-insulated, and so have no earth fittings in any case.
For those saying it would be unsafe, I'd really like to know why?
It is not advocated as a general rule, simply because you don't have control over what people will (not unreasonably) want to plug in. In your case it could be an electic iron - which is definitely unsafe, particularly as you would be left without an earth.
That said, laptops take so little power, that you are not risking much, particularly as they are double insulated and thus the earthing issue is irrelevant. People used to plug in shavers like this quite happily - although there was an obvious disadvantage in that you had to lose the only light in the room to do so.
