Why most of all the flowers in my garden during flop?
Even one that does not require support. Is it possible that my garden soil Missing something? I have all drought-tolerant plants such as purple coneflower, butterfly grass, etc. Shasta daisy I hardly ever water because the Last year I thought it was over watering which made them flop. My garden gets about six hours of sunlight.
Stems weak that they hold up well when the flowers are out indicates a weak stem variety, phosphorus deficiency, or the plant is in too much shade. Often, plants do not stand firm, nitrogen and receiving point of producing a rapid green growth. Fertilize with a balanced, high phosphorus fertilizer. That's the P in NPK. Give flour and bone meal plants seaweed or nitrogen in another, 5-10-10 full, slow-release fertilizer. The largest quantities of P & K will give the plants strong stems and less top growth, but more flowers. Note that nitrogen is easily leached (washed through the soil), but phosphorus and potassium are not, which means that require less frequent application. Search in water insoluble nitrogen (WIN) on the label. The greater the number of WIN, the more durable and safer for the environment of the fertilizer will be. Fertilizer application should be more frequent in sandy soils, but with lower rates each time due to the leaching potential of sand. That is, only 6 hours of light and that is pushing it in some plants, when the shade is in the afternoon, when they would receive normally the strongest light. Coneflowers do not mind the morning, but afternoon shade shade will make them come to light. One way to deal with this is to pinch the plants forcing them to produce shorter stems. You get smaller heads or Phlox plants like Sedum, but this can be very useful in maintaining the plants move higher. There is a great book available byTracy Disabato-Aust on perennial care. She details when, how, and what can be tweaked to give way. http://www.timberpress.com/authors/id.cfm/380 There is growing through the networks disappear into the foliage as the plant grows. These can be expensive or inexpensive. I know someone who uses old barbecue grills for this and in England to save small forked branches to push into the ground to act as a support for plants that tend to fall.
