How to string LEDs together?
I hope this is an easy question... I want to make a short, battery-operated, Christmas light style string of maybe 10 LED lights. Can anybody tell me how? Thanks!!

you cannot connect LEDs in parallel without putting a series resistor in with each one.
Connecting LEDs to the 120 VAC supply is dangerous. And it needs diode protection.
You have a problem. you want a "string" which implies series connection. But 10 LEDs will need about 20 or 30 volts, plus more for a series resistor.
You can get small (about AAA sized) 12 volt batteries, and you can put 3 of these in series to get 36 volts. You might be able to get by with 2 for 24 volts.
In more detail.... Get the specifications for the LEDs. Look for typical voltage drop and maximum voltage drop. I'll assume for this discussion that the max is 2 volts. Pick a current that is below the max current spec. Start with 10mA.
2 volts x 10 = 20 volts. Then you need a limiting resistor, I'd suggest a 10 volt drop across it, except that gives you 30 volts. For 24 volts, use a 4/0.01 = 400 ohm resistor. With only 4 volts across the resistor, you will get limited protection, but may work.
If you are limited to 9 volts for your battery, you will have to wire series strings of 3 bulbs each, with a 300 ohm resistor for each string of 3.
