Can I put a 75w light bulb into a fitting that says max 60w?
I have two new hanging lanterns and it says max 60w bulb. It doesn't look very bright and I have found (on the net for £7.50 each) a 75w halogen bulb with the same SES E14 fitting. The lights are on dimmer switches. Does anyone know if they are likely to work properly or overheat.
it's not a good idea but it will work. The wattage maximum is based on bulb heat and current pull. The higher the output the more amperage it draws which pulls more amps through the wires which will also heat up. Consumer electronics is built to have a high tolerance. They don't expect you to actually pay attention to the 60w max. It's there more for legal reasons. If you home burns down because it starts a fire, you were warned. Given the tolerances, I'd say go for it. I've used them for years without problems.
