I have built an amateur forge out of a heavy steel bbq grill, lining it with ceramic bricks. I think I'm about to line it in some oven cement. It stands up to 2k degrees. Anyway, I've got all the tools I need and the forge, as well as some blacksmith's coal for the fires. All I need is an anvil! I have found that Railroad bars are a lot less expensive than a good anvil. Understandably, I'm sure that there's no substitute for the real thing, but for some beginner work, will RR work well enough?

Rail works, but does not have the mass of an anvil, so it needs to be secured to a log or other mass just like a light anvil.
