Heating problems with my gas boiler?
hi,
ive got a gas boiler which is playing up, when i turn it on, it works perfect but then after an hour or so when i got enough hot water in the tanks (its an old boiler system with 2 water tanks in the loft, one for the radiators and one for general hot water), it starts to rumble like the pipes are banging like theres air in the system. plus the little flame on the main boiler stays on for ages by then i usually just turn it off.
ive bleeded all the radiators and also drained the whole system but it still does it, the radiators work fine and theres hot water in the tanks but when the tanks are fall the noises starts all over again.
please can anyone help

Sounds like one of two things are causing your noise. First thing I would suspect is the aqua-stat is not cutting the burner out when it reaches the set point (on a hot water system usually around 180-190F). This would result in heating the water to near boiling, causing the noise. Second is a little more difficult to find/prove. Defective spot in the casting of the boiler where air can separate from water and create a void. When the air is superheated it explodes out of the void and makes the noise you describe. Only seen this happen on 3 boilers in 14 years of hydronic service work. Hope this helps.
