bbq tank help 10 points?
i have a bbq gas tank in my garage, and have a few questions i'm buying a new gas grill for fathers day and i dont want to ask my dad these questions
1. how do i tell if its full
2. how do i tell what type of gas it is (propane, natural gas)
A few things to know first.If this is an older tank you can use the gas in it but you may not be able to refill it.It will have to be an OPD tank to refill.OPD stand for over fill protection devise,it will say this on the handle and the handle will be triangular in shape{old one will be round or have several fingers]You can exchange the tank or have a new valve installed if in is not an OPD but it will be cheaper to just replace the whole tank.Now for your question,it is a propane tank.The answers that other have given you are not wrong but a little incomplete.If it is an old tank and you shake it around there may be liquid in it but that liquid may not be propane.Old tanks will accumulate an oil called heavy ends.I have seen a lot in a tank so not always a good way to check.When weighing a tank it can vary several pounds depending on who manufactured it.I have seen them from 17 to25 pounds.There will be a tw # [tare weight]on the protection ring this is the weight of the tank when it is empty.Weigh it on a bathroom scale and subtract this number from it.This is the weight of the gas.If it is only a pound or two it may be gas or the heavy ends[oil].If it is full it will be 20 pounds plus the tare weight of the tank.
