Why are hot dogs from a store mini-restruant better tasting than cooking the same thing at home?
I bought a Nathen's hot dog from the Costco food counter and it was incredible! I've purchased the same hot dogs and tried to cook them at home (microwave, boiled, and on the grill) and they just aren't near as good. What is difference? Is there some magic to that little hot dog roaster that slowly spins them: or maybe you have to leave them sitting out for multiple hours/days to "age"!? What's the secret?
It's the odor. If you walked inside from out in the yard, and smelled a Nathans roasting on a grill in your kitchen, you would agree. The nice well steamed bun of course adds to the experience, but the aroma of the roasting dog, and the aroma of it's steam rising from the bun in your hand is the major difference.
The hot dog rollers allow the wiener to cook evenly, giving it the roasted flavor we miss from roasting one on a stick over an open flame, at a camp out. You can capture this aroma and flavor by broiling under an open flame in an oven broiler, or on a spit, over the BBQ or on a fork over the open flame of a gas range top. The problem is turning it often enough to only roast it and heat it through, without burning the outside.
Nathan's Rule! You might also try Hebrew National, and Best brands. Both, like Nathans, are all beef, and delicious.
