I received a gas smoker for a gift ..?

Today is the 1st time I've tryed to smoke anything. I bought some ribs from the store. Instead of using chips wood, or in pieces, I used some of mesquite-flavored wood pellets made by Char-Broil. Only smoked for about ten minutes. Is this normal? I thought they should smoke a lot longer than that. I followed all the instructions on the back of the bag. What do you think?

I have an electric smoker and add-ons. It should last longer than 10 minutes, but not all the time you are cooking. Some suggestions would be to soak the chips in water or other liquid flavoring before using or placing the chips in a place where they would be indirectly exposed to the fire and let them burn slower.
