Home-made rat cage help!?

I'm making a home-made rat-cage for the first time out of an old bookshelf because my parents will not buy me anything but the rats themselves. I will be getting two females, and the shelf is about 3 1/2 - 4 feet tall and about a foot wide. Is this big enough for both ratties? How should I go about doing this? How should I make the doors? What should I use to hang things such as hammocks, ropes, etc...?

Hey, Here is a great calculator to determine how much space you need for your rats and if your cage is big enough!! (Just make sure you switch it to inches since it defaults on centimetres).

Hammocks are always a hit. Take a trip to your local dollar store, pick up some cheap fleece blankets, some neat little plastic baskets, buckets, toys and some things to hang it all with and go to town! I get most of my rat toys and cage items at the dollar store and they love em!! :)

As for the doors... I'd suggest getting 1/2 inch or 1 inch hardware cloth and stapling it to a wooden frame and then just attach it to the shelf with hinges and throw a latch on there!

This site has some good info on building a cage:

Good luck!
